The Smithsonian's National Zoo welcomed a boy western lowland gorilla into
the world, which is cause for celebration as he is the first baby in 9
years! They referred to him as Moke, which is short for "small one," notes
pintiks.
After giving birth to her baby, the mother was seen on camera kissing him
on the lips. Before her third year in the zoo, Calaya, a 15-year-old mother
gorilla, mated with Baraka, a 26-year-old 450-pound gorilla.
Given the recent 20–25 year decline in the number of wild western lowland
gorillas, this birth is very noteworthy. What a wonderful time!
