Even though animals and people are different in many ways, it is hard not
to notice how much they are alike as well. One thing they have in common is
that they can both feel sadness and joy. Every once in a while, something
happens in the animal world that shows us how much they are like
people.
During one of these events in 2000, PBS showed a story that got news all
over the world.
Two elephants who used to work together in a circus and hadn't seen each
other in 22 years were filmed having a heartfelt meeting that will make even
the toughest people cry.
The video was shot at an animal shelter in Tennessee. We are given to quite
a show when Jenny and Shirley recognize each other after not seeing each
other for twenty years.
The emotional meeting serves as a warning that these animals feel things
the same way people do.
The people who took care of the animals got just as upset when they saw the
meeting. They were very excited to see how the elephants looked at each
other through the gates.
After a short time, it was clear that the elephants knew each other. The
next part of the video is sure to make you cry.
They both wrapped their bottoms around each other. This is how elephants
show they care for each other. Thank goodness the recording of Jenny and
Shirley's wonderful meeting is out there for all of us to enjoy. Now is a
good time to watch the two elephants get back together.
