Barbra Streisand Couldn’t Be ‘Prouder’ Of Gay Son Whose Father Felt ‘Frightened’ When He First Came Out(5 photos)

An absolute legend in the entertainment business is Barbra Streisand. Being one of the rare performers to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award (EGOT), Streisand is really multi-talented.

She began her career in the 1960s as a nightclub and Broadway performer. She quickly made the move to movies, where in 1968 she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her legendary performance as Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl." She went on to enjoy success in Hollywood and the music industry, even taking home a second Oscar for her score for the 1976 adaptation of "A Star is Born." Even at 81 years old, Streisand remains a formidable presence.

Her romantic life, however, is not as well-known as her profession. She spent a large portion of the 1960s married to actor Elliott Gould; the two had a son named Jason Gould. In "The Prince of Tides," Streisand and Jason costarred as mother and son.

It is well known that the mother and son are quite close. Jason has shared Streisand's admiration for the lady who reared him, having spent the most of his youth with her. Jason came out as homosexual in public, and his mother has only expressed love and admiration for her son. The celebrated singer and actress frequently states that one of her biggest blessings in life is Jason. The well-known mother and son duo is still around today, and they occasionally appear on stage together.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 24, 1942, Barbara Joan Streisand, better known by her stage name Barbra Streisand, was raised there. With the assistance of her critical but progressively encouraging mother, Streisand recorded a four-song demo cassette when she was thirteen years old. Even though Streisand was an outstanding vocalist, she always wanted to be an actress. When she was barely 14 years old, she witnessed "The Diary of Anne Frank," her first Broadway play, and was instantly enamored with the concept of performing. Streisand threw herself into the craft, reading about everything from acting theories to stage actresses.

But according to Streisand's 2003 interview with NPR, she never actually studied singing or learned how to read music. She clarified:

"I never sing with the intention of singing... Many years ago, I attempted to take a singing class.

The teacher attempted to teach Streisand how to articulate her vowels differently in order to carry the sound better, but Streisand refused to learn because she needed to "sing like I would speak," and as a result, she quit attending classes.

Streisand graduated from high school early at the age of sixteen thanks to her brilliance and her determination to finally pursue a career in show business full-time. She then went straight out and started trying out for parts on several stages in New York City.

At last, Streisand started landing parts in the 1960s. She went to an audition for "I Can Get It for You Wholesale," a musical comedy. Elliott played the protagonist, while Streisand was cast as his secretary. He was not highly recognized at the time, and behind closed doors, he and Streisand fell in love. Before being divorced in 1971, they were married in September 1963 and had one kid together.

As Streisand transitioned from a hopeful star to a true famous, she was starting to establish her reputation. She started making television and theater appearances, and she even had songs released commercially. She became well-known for her theatrical appearances, and Streisand capitalized on her celebrity by titling her first two albums "The Barbra Streisand Album" and "The Second Barbra Streisand Album."

With her critically acclaimed portrayal of Fanny Brice in "Funny Girl," Streisand mesmerized audiences with her rendition of "Don't Rain on My Parade." After the production became an instant hit, Streisand gained a great deal of notoriety and acclaim. She was even considered for a Tony Award nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. A few years later, she played the same part again in her debut motion picture, "Funny Girl," which was adapted from the Broadway smash. For this, Streisand won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Actress.

Even though it was obvious that everyone took Streisand's skill and profession seriously, the burgeoning celebrity kept showcasing other facets of her personality and made appearances in a number of camp comedies, such as "For Pete's Sake" and "The Main Event." She appeared in the film "A Star is Born" in 1976, and she and lyricist Paul Williams shared the 1976 Academy Award for Best Original Song for their song "Evergreen."

Streisand is the first woman to star, write, produce, and direct a major movie picture, according to her biography. In addition, she is the only recording artist to have albums chart at No. 1 for six straight decades and the first female composer to receive an Academy Award.

She has also demonstrated that she has even more tricks up her sleeve by using her acting skills to work behind the scenes and legitimately occupy the director's chair. In an interview with CBS News, Streisand discussed her choice to pursue a career as a director in addition to her roles as an actor and singer. Says she:

When you're merely an actor, many consider it inappropriate for you to make suggestions on the plot of the entire movie. It is required of directors to be well-versed on the replies. It is required of you to give instructions to others.

Despite having a hectic life, Streisand has managed to find time for her loved ones. Streisand has been married twice in her private life. Elliott was her first husband. She later dated Pierre Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada. Jon Peters, a hairdresser and producer, who later became Streisand's manager and producer, and she started dating him in 1973. Nevertheless, the two broke up while filming the 1983 movie "Yentl." Although the movie changed Streisand's career and brought her more accolades, it didn't have the same positive effects on her and Peters' relationship. Thankfully, their friendship has endured.

Actor Don Johnson and Streisand dated for over a year, during which time they collaborated on a duet titled "Till I Loved You." Additionally, Streisand had short romances with Clint Eastwood and Richard Gere in the 1980s. Though she searched for deep connections, it was evident that Streisand was very committed to her relationships; nonetheless, none of them succeeded until she met the guy she is currently married to.

Although Streisand has become accustomed to her role as a key person in the public eye over the years, she has often talked about her long marriage to director and actor James Brolin.

People would assume that Streisand and Brolin had known each other for their whole lives given how solid their connection is now. But according to PEOPLE, the two actually met on a blind date. Not quite as romantic as in the movies. Actually, Streisand teased Brolin about his hair during their first interaction.

"We had arranged a blind date, and because I was extremely shy, I entered the house and went downstairs to play with the kids until it was time for me to eat," Streisand said.

Luckily, there was no denying their chemistry. Despite the fact that it took her "a few days" for the feelings to return, Streisand said Brolin informed her that "he knew (right away)" that she was the one for him.

He remembers that when Brolin and Streisand first got together, his friends originally told him not to get married to the singer. He remarked on "The Talk," "I heard it over and over again that she's a tough one." Luckily, he disregarded their advice. The couple dated for two years before being married on July 1, 1998.

PEOPLE claims that Brolin delivered a well-known speech during the event, while Streisand performed two songs:

How fortunate I am that this should occur to me at such a late age is beyond words. Every evening is a brand-new journey. Time is wasted sleeping. I'm eager to see her once again in the morning.

Their long-lasting, happy marriage is the result of several things. Both celebs have continued to pursue their own professions and remain independent. Brolin stated on HuffPost Live that in order to keep things simple, he and Streisand each have their own finances and work to keep them separate.

According to Streisand's interview with Extra, "kindness" is the reason behind their happy marriage. She thinks couples may maintain the health of their own relationships by following her straightforward advice. Says she:

"Commit compassion while speaking the truth, says the Dalai Lama. Years ago, I really used the truth as a weapon, saying things like, "Well, you look fat because you're fat. I'm telling you the truth." In a different words, truth with compassion might state, "I don't think you can take each other for granted."

In addition to disclosing intimate information about her connection with her kid, Streisand has also been transparent about her romantic life as of late. Elliott, her former partner, has also discussed his relationship with Jason.

Elliott has only had positive things to say about Streisand, their joint kid, and managing the dynamics of a blended family. He said, "People will assume how things should be, but things are the way they are." It's all about us, in my opinion. It's not focused on any one element.

Elliott has only shown that he is still a member of the family by being close to Barbra. He revealed:

"I told her that even though I know you're now married to someone else and I only wish you the best, you're a part of our small family and I'll always be here,"

Barbra is a very important part of my life, no less so than the rest of my family, he continued. Our lives are brightened by Jason.

Streisand said she will always be proud of her son in an exclusive interview with The Advocate.

"I have no desire for my son to be anything other than who he is. He is intelligent, kind, perceptive, compassionate, and an all-around decent and diligent guy. He is an extremely talented actor and director. Could a parent ask for more from their child? I've been quite fortunate," she said.

He was raised in the spotlight with his renowned and legendary mother, Jason, who was born in 1966. That he would be a talented singer should come as no surprise. Jason said in a 2017 interview with Billboard that he has been musically inclined since he was a little child.

"I used to make up songs when I was little. I never had the courage to finish a song, so I would just sit at the piano and figure out chord progressions that I liked," he said.

Jason, who is 56 years old, is proud of who he is. He has acknowledged that he is not like his mother.

The pressure to be evaluated or compared is something I acknowledge I cannot control. Furthermore, it doesn't really matter who my mother is in the end since I have to be genuine. However, we are all products of our parents," he disclosed.

Jason is fortunate to have a mother who is fully committed to him. She posted a touching old picture of herself holding him as a newborn on Mother's Day in 2020, when she was dressed in character on the set. She captioned the photo with, "Mother's Day...nothing makes me prouder than being your mom honey."

Jason was making news even before he was born. Streisand was in the middle of preparing for a 20-city tour that was expected to earn her over $1 million when she found out she was pregnant. But Streisand called off her performances, and media sites went on to call Jason the "million-dollar baby."

There is a strong mother-son tie between Jason and Streisand. At the age of 21, Jason came out to his mother for the first time, and she wasn't overly shocked. But his father received the news quite differently. Jason said that his father "did not suspect" he was gay, in contrast to his mother:

"It was far more challenging for him. I believe he believed it to be a passing phase that I would get over. But he comes from a different generation.

But since then, Elliot has come to love his kid without conditions and embraced him completely for who he is. Elliot is still close to his son and ex wife even after their divorce from Streisand; he frequently joins them for dinners. He declared:

"Barbra stated that she is aware that no one could or would love our boy as much as I do. And I'll be here forever. I'm totally committed to us.

Though it's "taken me so long to understand things, to really get here in balance... I love Barbra," he said. Additionally, Jason Barbra is an amazing individual. She is someone I greatly admire. She also raises our son well.

In addition, Elliot said of his son, "one of the finest, most decent human beings I will ever know."

Regarding the ignorance, bias, and shallowness that members of our species exhibit, we must be conscious of it. I never imagined that I would or could be this alert. You know, I was very afraid. Furthermore, I'm straight. I'm not homosexual, but I'm humorous.
