Throughout his life, James Caan was married multiple times and had a large
family. But he didn't make the decision to change his life until after he
lost his dear sister.
James Caan died on July 7, 2022, leaving behind a beloved artist for the
globe. His passing the day before was confirmed by his family.
The actor really lived a full life in his 82 years. He wed the actress Dee
Jay Mathis in 1961. In their brief five-year marriage, which ended in
divorce, the couple gave birth to a daughter they called Tara.
Caan remarried not long after his first marriage ended in divorce. This
time around, Sheila Ryan, a Playboy model. He remarried Ryan in 1976, but
their divorce in 1977 made it even shorter than their last union. However,
the couple welcomed their son Scott Caan during their marriage.
Caan, never one to give up, began dating Ingrid Hajek and wed her in 1990.
He was his wife's elder by 20 years. Before divorcing in 1994, they had a
son together whom they called Alexander.
A few time after his third divorce, he found love once more. In 1995, the
actor wed Linda Stokes. This was his longest marriage, lasting 20 years, yet
it was at best turbulent.
The couple was involved in a protracted court dispute. James Jr. and Jacob,
the couple's two kids, were both involved in the court dispute between their
parents.
Stokes sued Caan in court for a number of issues, including custody of
their boys and back-dated child support. Before the final filing in 2015,
James filed for divorce twice, first in 2005 and then again in 2009.
Caan declined a chance to play a part in "Apocalypse Now" in 1976 because
his second wife, Playboy model Sheila Ryan, was expecting their second child
at the time.
Caan referred to the kid Ryan was carrying as his "dream child." To be
present for Ryan throughout her pregnancy, he gave up a house in Manilla
with a maid and flew to the jungle site to film shots.
He informed the producer that he was out of the project because he detested
heights and tsetse bugs. He wished to support his wife during her
pregnancy.
Caan's loss of his sister Barbara Caan in 1981 dealt him a fatal blow.
Barbara Caan had been battling leukemia and was just 38 years old when she
passed away.
He was saddened when he lost his sister. According to reports, he described
his feelings as "weak and dejected." Not only did he refer to Barbara as his
sister, but also as his greatest friend and manager. Barbara always lived
close to her brother and operated his production firm.
Caan had several realizations after she died. The only person he was
terrified of was her. He also came to understand how quickly both things and
passions may end. As a result, he adopted a new attitude, claiming that "My
desire was to grow up alongside my son."
James put his career on hold while Scott was growing up. Scott claims that
his father performed very few jobs when he was growing up, and Scott didn't
even know his father was an actor until he was 15 years old.
After his sister died away and Scott was around five years old, James Caan
made the choice to put his career on wait and devote his attention to his
son.
James was all Scott knew of him as a parent. And even though he
subsequently remembered his turbulent upbringing, he claimed that his father
was the only one who had caused it.
He was unaware of the fame his father had, and because the majority of his
father's work was not suitable for children, he was only able to watch his
first film featuring him when he was 11 years old. He was a little upset
after watching "The Godfather."
James got really distressed when he saw his father being shot. He also
acknowledged his father's famous reputation and achievements, despite the
fact that he did not completely comprehend the movie.
It was not all rosy, despite Jame's dedication to his son. Later, Scott
acknowledged in interviews that the connection between the father and son
was highly unhealthy.
James was very honest about his shortcomings as a father. He eventually
acknowledged that his son could have gone through some discomfort as a
result of his battle with addiction. He acknowledged that he was "a touch
rough around the edges" at the time.
But Scott doesn't have any grudges against his father. While he admits that
certain actions had a detrimental impact on them both, he could not dispute
the fact that his father was there for him at all times.
As Scott approached his pre-teen and teenage years, their relationship
experienced significant damage. Scott was athletic and participated in
sports, much like his father had done before him. He wanted to create his
own personality and cease participating in sports that his father favored by
the time he was 11 or 12. Additionally, he started mixing with the wrong
crowd and doing drugs.
James Caan enjoyed team sports, which inspired his son to engage in hobbies
his father disapproved of like skateboarding and surfing. These two actions
were seen as being reserved for troublemakers at the time.
The older Caan did not like that his son was involved in these things.
People who had skill but wasted it were one of his pet peeves. He
anticipated that his small kid would either excel at what he did in a
similar way or not do it at all.
Caan did his best as a dad, but he wasn't faultless. In an interview, he
stated, "I never saw my dad weep. Son witnessed my tears. Since my father
never expressed his affection for me, I constantly told Scott that I loved
him.
He took parenting extremely seriously because he wanted to raise his son
Scott to be the "ideal Caan."
The younger Caan also became a parent in July 2014. Together with his
longtime lover Kacy Byxbee, he had a daughter. Their daughter was given the
name Josie James Caan, and Scott Caan, like his father, took some time off
work after his daughter was born.
None of the Caan children—aside from Scott Caan—opted for a career in
Hollywood. Tara Caan wishes to completely avoid the spotlight.
But Scott Caan decided to pursue acting, precisely like his father. In Los
Angeles, he received his training at Playhouse West. His breakout
performance came in the 2001 version of "Ocean's Eleven." Later, he appeared
in a number of well-known TV series and films, including "Hawaii Five-0,"
"Into the Blue," and others.
James did not want his kid to end up in Hollywood as his father did,
despite the fact that he wanted to create the ideal Caan. Later, Scott said
that his father's lack of enthusiasm was a result of his father's knowledge
of the difficulties involved in doing the same role repeatedly and for seven
years.
The late actor constantly counseled aspiring professionals to choose their
families above their jobs. He was renowned for telling many aspiring
performers, "family first."
Scott ignored his father's counsel, but it appeared that his other siblings
had avoided the spotlight. Tara decided against pursuing fame. Electronic
