Orange County Fire Rescue presented James Garcia with the Young Hero Award
on Sunday "for his heroic actions" earlier this month.
The local fire department in Florida has recognized a kindergartener for
his contribution to saving his grandmother's life earlier this month.
On November 4, "when she experienced a medical emergency," James Garcia was
at home with his grandmother Rosa, according to Orange County Fire
Rescue.
James reportedly added, "I heard a bumping sound and that was my grandma
falling," according to NBC station WESH.
The 6-year-old, who was being watched at the time, reportedly swiftly
contacted 911 on a phone, according to FOX affiliate WOFL and CBS affiliate
WKMG-TV.
James heroically "stayed on the line with dispatch until help arrived,"
according to officials.
James informed dispatch during the call, "I don't know what's happening to
my grandma... I'm scared," according to reports.
According to WESH, Nicholas Wilson was the first rescuer to confront James
when they arrived at the Orange County residence. "Surprising to see a
little man" answer the door, he remarked.
He told the broadcaster, "They said there was somebody there helping
grandma, and I didn't realize he was so young."
James can be heard directing emergency personnel to his grandmother's room,
which is likely where the medical incident had place, in the 911 call that
WOFL was able to get. A paramedic can be heard praising the youngster, "Good
job, buddy!" once she is located.
James was presented with the Young Hero Award by Orange County Fire Rescue
at Station 58 on Sunday, November 4, "for his heroic actions."
During the special ceremony, James clutched a unique plaque while he and
his grandma posed for a picture in front of an ambulance. Rosa described
James as her "number one" to WOFL.
"If I loved him before, you have no idea how much I do now," she stated to
WESH.
